Dental Fads That Are Bad for Your Teeth

We all want a whiter, brighter, and healthier smile, but unfortunately some people go to extreme lengths to get one. While there are many great ways to maintain a gorgeous smile at home, there are some popular fads that are actually damaging for your teeth. Read on to learn which dental trends to avoid to protect your oral health!

1. Lemon Juice & Baking Soda

Lemon juice and baking soda is a popular combination for DIY teeth whitening. The problem is that lemon juice is very acidic and baking soda is very abrasive. Together, these can cause extensive damage to your enamel, tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, and pain.

2. Charcoal

Charcoal is an ingredient popping up everywhere in cosmetic products these days. If you are using charcoal to whiten your teeth, stop! The non-activated stuff is actually poisonous. And according to the American Dental Association, the activated kind has not been proven to be effective and safe. Activated charcoal is abrasive and can wear down your enamel over time. This exposes the dentin layer underneath and makes your teeth actually appear more yellow.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a main ingredient in many whitening products, but don’t use it as a rinse on its own. It will end up damaging your gums!

4. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient practice in which you swish coconut, sunflower, or sesame oil around your mouth for about 20 minutes at a time. While oil pulling may freshen your breath, it should never be a substitute for daily brushing and flossing. There is no reliable scientific evidence proving oil pulling’s effectiveness in cleaning or whitening your teeth. Use your oils to cook healthy meals instead!

5. Extreme Diets

Extreme diets and cleanses may have an impact on your waistline in the short term, but they can also damage your teeth over time. If you eat a diet that is lacking in calcium, fiber, magnesium, and phosphorus, your teeth won’t be as strong as they can be. It’s important to work with your doctor or a dietician to figure out a diet plan that’s good for your whole body. If you are trying to lose weight, opt for safe, sustainable lifestyle changes instead of extreme deprivations.
