How Safe Are X-Rays?

Dentist points at a panoramic X-ray and discusses its results with a female patient

Digital dental X-rays are special pictures that show what’s underneath the surface of tissues in a patient’s mouth. They help our team diagnose dental disease and other problems in the mouth and jaw.

Purposes of Dental X-Rays

At Sullivan Family Dental, we may recommend dental X-rays every so often for various reasons. For example, if you have: current tooth pain; loose teeth; tooth decay or gum disease; unexplained oral bleeding, sensitivity, or swelling; facial trauma; abnormal growth or coloring of their teeth; or a family history of unusual dental issues.

X-ray images help us create a more efficient treatment plan to address dental issues that could cause more serious problems in the future if left untreated.

How Safe Are Dental X-Rays?

We embrace advanced technology at our dental office. Compared to traditional X-rays, modern digital X-rays emit less radiation and are faster. We can snap clear pictures instantly with small digital sensors, reducing your exposure time while getting even better imaging than outdated traditional X-ray technology.

Dental X-rays expose a patient to very low level of radiation. Radiation has been identified as a carcinogen. However, the low level of radiation exposure and infrequency of exposure means that, in general, the benefits of dental X-rays outweigh the minimal risk of potential harm.

Our team does all we can to ensure that each patient’s exposure to radiation is “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.” We will only recommend X-rays when necessary and you’ll wear a leaded apron and/or collar.
